England to referee Forest cup clash

Written by Dan King

Darren England will be the referee when Newcastle United face Nottingham Forest in the second round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday (kick-off 7.45pm BST).

It will be the first time that the 31-year-old from South Yorkshire has taken charge of a game involving the Magpies.

He refereed last season's League Two play-off final between Blackpool and Exeter, having ran the line in the Premier League for several seasons. He was also an assistant referee in the 2015 FA Cup final.

So far this season he's been the man in the middle on four occasions - three times in the Championship and once in the Carabao Cup first round. He has shown 15 yellow cards and one red.

On Wednesday night, England will be assisted by Billy Smallwood and Christopher Akers. Martin Coy is the fourth official.
