Elson excited to return to Kingston Park

By the time Sunday's game comes around it will have been 42 days since United last played at Kingston Park - a 2-1 win against Derby County Women - so it's fitting that they face familiar foes on their return home.

United have history against Liverpool Feds, with the Merseyside-based team pipping Becky Langley's side to the FA Women's National League Division One North title back in 2021/22.

Newcastle beat them 4-0 at Jericho Lane Sports Hub earlier this term, with Elson scoring the opening goal that day, but the winger knows Newcastle's long-time rivals will be tough opponents on Sunday.

"They've always been a difficult team to break down," Elson told nufc.co.uk. "We certainly shouldn't underestimate what they can do on the ball, even considering we've beaten them already.

"There's a lot of history between the two clubs and there was very much a sense of revenge the first time we played them in this league because of when they pipped us to the league and stopped us being in this league a year earlier."

With just four games left to play, Elson and her United team-mates will continue to just take one game at a time and look to pick up three more points.

Langley's side drew 1-1 when they last welcomed Feds to the North East, in April 2022, but with a lively Kingston Park crowd set to be in attendance, Elson can't wait to return to league action.

"I'm very excited (to be back at Kingston Park)," she said. "It's been a very long time. We always want to give the fans three points and a win.

"Their support is great and no matter where we go we feel as though we've got the home advantage because they're our 12th player."

This will be Newcastle's penultimate home game of the season, but nobody is looking beyond this weekend and how important it is to maintain this good run of league form, as Elson explained.

"It's three points at a time and they're the three points we want this weekend," she insisted. "We'll not be looking any further than this game and hopefully get across the line on Sunday."

Elson has scored some big goals already this season against the likes of Nottingham Forest Women, Burnley Women and Wolverhampton Wanders Women and admitted that it's been an 'eye-opening' experience playing and training with so many talented players.

She added: "This has been a really good challenge being in this league. I think when you play against good players and train with better players, you improve yourself so it's been an eye-opening season for me."
