Eddie Howe wins Premier League Barclays Manager of the Month award

Written by Dan King

Eddie Howe has acknowledged his staff, players and the Newcastle United supporters after winning the Premier League's Barclays Manager of the Month award for February.

The Magpies boss led his side to three wins and a draw in February - and has picked up two more victories in March, too - and beat off competition from Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp, Mikel Arteta of Arsenal and Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhüttl.

United beat Everton and Aston Villa at St. James' Park before earning a draw at Champions League-chasing West Ham, and rounded off the month with a 2-0 victory at Brentford last weekend.

It is the fourth time Howe has won the award - he also received it in March 2017, January 2018 and October 2018, when he was in charge at AFC Bournemouth - and he insisted on being joined by coaches Dan Hodges, Graeme Jones, Jason Tindall, Simon Weatherstone, Ben Dawson, Stephen Purches, Adam Bartlett, Simon Smith and Mark Leyland to receive the prize this time around.

"It feels really nice and I'm very thankful to receive the award," he told nufc.co.uk. "But I'm receiving it, really, on behalf of everyone connected with the club - the staff, the players, the owners.

"I'm just the guy who stands on the touchline but there's a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes to produce consistent results so I have to say a big thank you to everyone connected with the club, including the supporters.

"They're the extra man and they made such a difference for us during the month, so a big thank you to them, too."

A public vote was combined with those of a panel of football experts to decide the winner.

Ryan Fraser had been nominated for the Premier League's EA Sports Player of the Month award, but lost out to Liverpool defender Joël Matip.

"I'm receiving it, really, on behalf of everyone connected with the club - the staff, the players, the owners. "I'm just the guy who stands on the touchline but there's a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes."
