Ed Sheeran's stunning first show at St. James' Park is huge success

Written by Dan King

Ed Sheeran was at St. James' Park as part of his ÷ Tour on Friday night - and just under 50,000 people watched the Shape of You singer perform at the home of Newcastle United.

And there are two more concerts from the multi-award winning star to come on Saturday and Sunday night.

In years gone by, the likes of the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Queen and Rod Stewart have played at St. James' Park, and this was another memorable night of live music at the famous stadium.

Sheeran, the world's best-selling recording artist of last year, delighted the crowd with hits like Castle on the Hill, Perfect, The A Team and Don't.

He told the audience that although he'd been to St. James' Park before to watch a Newcastle United match, he had been taken aback by its size and scale as a concert venue.

Support came from Jamie Lawson, whose set featured Wasn't Expecting That, and chart-topping Anne-Marie, who embarks upon her own tour later this year and treated fans to tunes including Ciao Adios, Rockabye and her latest single, 2002.

And the stadium's setting at the heart of the city meant gig-goers were able to continue the party even after Sheeran's sensational set came to an end.
