Dúbravka helps Slovakia record emphatic win

Martin Dúbravka helped Slovakia to a second 5-1 victory in succession on Tuesday as they thrashed Azerbaijan in their European Championship qualifier.

The Newcastle United goalkeeper missed out on his country’s emphatic friendly win over Jordan on Friday, but was restored to manager Pavel Hapal’s line-up for the Group E clash at the Bakcell Arena in Baku.

It proved to be a quiet evening for the 30-year-old, whose side went 2-0 up thanks to goals from Stanislav Lobotka and Juraj Kucka.

Ramil Seydayev beat Dúbravka to pull one back for the hosts on the half hour, but Marek Hamsik’s double and David Hancko’s strike put the result beyond doubt, leaving Slovakia in second place in their group, three points behind leaders Hungary.

Dúbravka played the full 90 minutes in what will be his final outing of the 2018/19 season.

Meanwhile, on Monday, young forward Elias Sørensen was on target once more for Denmark Under-20s – but couldn’t prevent them from slipping to a 3-2 defeat to Norway.

The 19-year-old, who also scored in his team’s 2-1 loss to Iceland on Friday, bagged the Danes’ second after entering the fray as a substitute, but it wasn’t enough to spark a comeback.
