Donohue in the middle at Donny

Written by Tom Easterby

Matt Donohue will referee Newcastle United’s Checkatrade Trophy opener at Doncaster Rovers on Tuesday night (7pm kick-off).

A United under-21 side travel to the Keepmoat Stadium for their first group game of the competition tonight and Donohue is the man tasked with keeping control of the contest.

Manchester whistler Donohue was promoted to the National List of Referees ahead of the start of the current campaign, having worked his way up to the Football League after brief stints in the National League North and the National League.

And this midweek cup clash will be his fourth outing of the season so far, with the previous three having come in League Two.

Donohue took charge of Colchester United’s 2-0 win over Port Vale, Stevenage’s 1-0 win over Morecambe and Cheltenham Town’s 1-0 win at Cambridge United. He dished out a total of 11 yellow cards in those games, but is yet to issue a red.

He will be assisted by David Benton and Thomas Harty on Tuesday night, while Alan Clayton is the fourth official.
