Date set for Rovers Carabao Cup clash

A date has been set for Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup second round clash with Blackburn Rovers at St. James’ Park.

The Magpies face Tony Mowbray’s Rovers in what will be their first home outing of the new campaign, with a trip to either Oldham Athletic or Morecambe in the third round awaiting the winners of the contest.

And it has been confirmed that United will host the Championship side behind closed doors on Tuesday, 15th September, with kick-off set for 7:30pm.

It will be the third time in three seasons that Newcastle have lined up against Blackburn in cup competition, with Rovers holding United to a 1-1 draw at St. James’ Park in the FA Cup third round in 2018/19. The Magpies prevailed in the replay, winning 4-2 in the replay at Ewood Park.

Former United forward Adam Armstrong could feature against his former side for Mowbray’s men. The 23-year-old, who made 21 appearances for Newcastle after coming through the ranks at St. James’ Park, netted 17 times in all competitions for Rovers last term, picking up the club’s player of the season award.
