Cass joins Port Vale on loan

Young defender Lewis Cass has joined Port Vale on loan for the duration of the 2021/22 season.

The North Shields-born 21-year-old spent last term on loan at Hartlepool United, playing 35 times as he helped Pools win promotion back to the Football League via the Vanarama National League play-offs.

In January, he signed a new contract with the Magpies and he will now step into League Two with the Valiants.

Cass joined Newcastle at the age of 12 and can play at right-back or centre-back, shining for Hartlepool on the right-hand side of a three-man defence last term.

He has yet to make his senior Magpies debut, but was named on the bench at Fulham in the Premier League on the final day of the 2018/19 season and for an Emirates FA Cup tie at Rochdale in January 2020.

"I'm delighted to sign on a season-long loan to a club with a massive ambition to get into League One," Cass told nufc.co.uk. "Last season was great for me personally and I'm hoping this season I can prove that I'm able to compete at this level.

"I'm looking forward to pushing myself to improve at a higher level to hopefully come back to Newcastle and be closer to a first team place.

"I'm hoping to improve myself this season both technically and physically as well as learning the knowledge of the game a lot more. I'm hoping to play as many games as possible - and hopefully that gets us promoted."
