Bruce reacts to Carabao Cup draw

Steve Bruce says Newcastle United have a "wonderful opportunity" to reach the Carabao Cup semi-finals after the Magpies were drawn away to Brentford in the last eight.

United booked their place in the quarter-finals after a 5-4 penalty shoot-out win at Newport County on Wednesday following a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes at Rodney Parade and will travel to the newly-built Brentford Community Stadium for the first time in the week commencing Monday, December 21st.

The Magpies will aim to reach their first domestic cup semi-final since 2005, as well as the last four of the League Cup for the first time since 1976 - the same year they went on to reach the final before losing 2-1 to Manchester City at the old Wembley Stadium.

And with the likes of Manchester United, Man City, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal remaining in the competition, Bruce was pleased with the outcome of drawing the Championship outfit.

"It's given us a wonderful opportunity, that's for sure, against a very good Brentford side," he said.

"It won't be easy, none of them are, but we've got to be pleased with the draw when you see the big names who are in there and who we've avoided.

"Make no mistake, Brentford are a very good side as we've just seen yesterday. I watched them play against Fulham and, over the last few years, have got a certain model.

"They've built the stadium, they sell a player and bring one in and it has been seamless in the way they've gone about their work.

"All credit to them - they've done fantastically well but it's a wonderful opportunity for us. It'll be a difficult game but there's a great chance (of progressing)."
