Bankes on the Tyne on Friday night

Written by Dan King

Peter Bankes will be the referee when Newcastle United face Wolverhampton Wanderers at St. James' Park on Friday night (kick-off 8pm BST).

It will be the second Magpies match that the Merseyside official has refereed this season - he was the man in the middle for December's defeat at Leicester City - and his 23rd fixture overall of the campaign. He has shown 91 yellow cards and two red so far this term across all competitions.

Bankes was promoted to Select Group 1 ahead of the 2019–20 campaign and his first Premier League game came in August 2019, when Leicester beat a Bournemouth side managed by Eddie Howe. His first top flight red card came in February 2020, when he sent off Newcastle's Valentino Lazaro against Crystal Palace.

On Sunday, Bankes will be assisted by James Mainwaring and Wade Smith, with Tony Harrington the fourth official.

Jarred Gillett will be the Video Assistant Referee at Stockley Park, assisted by Derek Eaton.
