Ayoze up for Premier League goal of the month prize

Written by Dan King

Ayoze Pérez's audacious lob against Leicester City has been nominated for the Carling Premier League goal of the month award for April.

Florian Lejeune's clearance caught out the Foxes' defence and Pérez improvised superbly to lift the ball over the head of Kasper Schmeichel from well outside the box.

The Magpies went on to win 2-1 at the King Power Stadium and the goal has been shortlisted for the award alongside Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli's goals for Tottenham against Chelsea, Paul Pogba's first of the game for Manchester United against Manchester City, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's strike for Arsenal against Southampton, Mohamed Salah's effort against AFC Bournemouth, Kevin De Bruyne's piledriver for Manchester City against Swansea and Wilfried Zaha's goal for Crystal Palace, also against Leicester.

Pérez has made a habit of scoring eye-catching goals since he joined Newcastle from Tenerife in the summer of 2014. He won the NUFC TV goal of the season for 2014/15, for a wonderful backheeled flick against West Bromwich Albion, then received the same award last term after finishing off a brilliant team move against Ipswich Town.

Supporters can vote for the best goal here. Voting closes at midday BST on Thursday, 3rd May and the winning goal will be announced on Tuesday, 8th May.
