Atsu included in Ghana's provisional AFCON squad

Written by Luke Vinton

Newcastle United winger Christian Atsu has been selected for Ghana's 29-man squad ahead of next month's African Cup of Nations in Egypt.

The Black Stars will travel to Dubai on Saturday for pre-tournament preparations before coach Kwasi Appiah will narrow his squad down to 23 players ahead of their 22nd appearance at the finals in June.

Ghana, who have won the African Cup of Nations four times, will compete in Group F along with current holders Cameroon, Guinea-Bissau and Benin as the tournament kicks off on Friday, 21st June.

Ghana secured top spot in Group F to gain qualification to the finals, finishing ahead of Kenya, Ethiopia and Sierra Leone with three wins out of four and will be aiming to end a 39-year wait for a fifth AFCON title.

Atsu, who has scored nine times in 42 international appearances, was on the losing side for Ghana four years ago, losing the 2015 final following a penalty shoot-out defeat against Ivory Coast.

Despite the devastating defeat, the 27-year-old was awarded the Player of the Tournament and scored the Goal of the Tournament, the latter of his brace in a 3-0 win over Guinea in the quarter-final.
