Ashington test for young Magpies

Written by Dan King

A young Newcastle United side will make the short trip to Ashington for a pre-season friendly on Tuesday evening.

Peter Beardsley will take a Magpies XI to Woodhorn Lane to face the Colliers in a 7.30pm (BST) kick-off. United lifted the Whitby Town Challenge Cup at the weekend, and some of the players involved in that tournament are likely to feature on Tuesday night.

The game will be refereed by Premier League official Michael Oliver.

Ashington's joint-managers are former Blyth Spartans boss Tom Wade and ex-England cricketer Steve Harmison, and the latter told his club's official website: "It's fantastic that Newcastle United are putting themselves in the community and hopefully the game will attract a good crowd and bring in some revenue for the club."

Harmison's brother, Ben, scored the only goal when the two sides met in a friendly last summer.

Admission is £6 for adults and £2 concessions.
