Armstrong nets against Argentina

Written by Dan King

Adam Armstrong is targeting World Cup glory with England under-20s - after helping the Young Lions open their campaign with a win.

The 20-year-old Geordie was on the scoresheet in a 3-0 victory over Argentina in Jeonju, South Korea, on Saturday, while Newcastle goalkeeper Freddie Woodman kept a clean sheet.

Armstrong scored England's second goal, with Everton's Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Chelsea man Dominic Solanke also on target.

It was England's first win at an Under-20 World Cup since a Michael Owen strike secured a 1-0 victory over Mexico in the 1997 edition in Malaysia.

And, speaking to TheFA.com, Armstrong said: "It was good to get the win and the monkey off our back so we can settle down a bit out on the pitch.

"All the lads are raring to go now; we've got a great squad here and all the boys think we can do really well and hopefully go on and win it.

"I thought it was a very tough game but the boys knew it was going to be difficult. We dug it out really well, kept the ball when we got it and we killed them on the counter and I think that's the main thing.

"We got that first goal, which relaxed us a bit and then we played our football in the second half and got the goals on the break, which was amazing.

"It (the second goal) was crucial, as whoever scored the next goal would have had the upper hand - and fortunately for us it was England."
