Almirón in action against Argentina

Written by Dan King

Miguel Almirón played the full game as Paraguay claimed a creditable draw with Argentina in World Cup qualifying on Thursday night.

Lionel Messi & Co are now unbeaten in 23 games, but failed to score for the first time since June 2019 in Asunción.

The result leaves Argentina in second place in the CONMEBOL section table, and Paraguay sixth. The top four teams qualify automatically for Qatar next year and the fifth-placed side goes into an inter-regional playoff.

Meanwhile, teenage goalkeeper Max Thompson was named on the bench for England under-18s against Norway in Marbella, with Ajax shot-stopper Charlie Setford starting between the posts.

Chelsea's Jude Soonsup-Bell gave England the lead, but Niklas Odegard levelled and Hovden Flataker fired home a winner for Norway with two minutes left.

Thompson - one of three goalkeepers in new coach Ryan Garry's first Young Lions squad - will hope to make what would be his international debut against Russia's youngsters on Monday.
