Allan on the cover for Oxford FA Cup clash

He made his Newcastle United debut in the FA Cup third round replay win over Rochdale earlier this month – and now Tom Allan is the official matchday programme cover star for the fifth round visit of Oxford United on Saturday.

The 20-year-old came on as a substitute in the 4-1 over Dale just under a fortnight ago, and could get another opportunity to pull on the black and white shirt as another League One side arrive at St. James’ Park this weekend, with a place in the last 16 to play for.

And Allan’s image adorns the front cover of Saturday’s issue of UNITED, while there is also an in-depth eight-page interview with the youngster inside.

In it, the former Cramlington Juniors man opens up about his bow for his boyhood club and shares some memories of what was a night he’ll always remember.

There are also columns from head coach Steve Bruce and captain Jamaal Lascelles, and Chris Hedworth – one of three players to go in goal for the Magpies during their infamous game at West Ham in 1986, and who made one of his ten Newcastle appearances against the U’s – recalls his time at St. James’ Park.

As United look to avoid a banana skin, Paul Joannou looks back at their near miss against lower league York City in the semi-finals of the 1954/55 competition.

As is the norm for cup games, certain features – such as the ever-popular Toon Tombola, which was discussed on Greg James’ BBC Radio 1 Breakfast show earlier this week – won’t be included in the reduced-size 68-page issue, though the Tombola and High Hopes will return for next weekend’s Premier League clash with Norwich City.

Meanwhile, Stan Gate remembers some of the Magpies’ most memorable fourth round encounters with the help of a string of archive matchday programmes and other items of memorabilia.
