United stars visit local hospitals before Christmas

Newcastle United's players visited local hospitals on Tuesday to spread some festive cheer to poorly youngsters.

The team went to the children's wards at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary and the Freeman Hospital to meet youngsters, pose for photographs, sign autographs and hand over presents. They were joined by players from the club's under-23 squad and Newcastle United Women Football Club.

Skipper Jamaal Lascelles said: "As players - and as human beings - it puts into perspective how lucky you are. When times are tough, really and truly you've got nothing to moan about because you've got babies, toddlers and kids here who are fighting for their lives. We'll get down about a game or an injury and go home and be miserable but these kids are here smiling and seeing the reaction on the kids' faces is lovely."

Meanwhile defender Paul Dummett said: "It's tough to see the kids when you know some of them are going to be in hospital over Christmas - it's a family time and it's tough when they're in hospital, but for us to come here and help put a smile on their faces is a pleasure for us."

Club photographer Serena Taylor joined the players on the wards to bring nufc.co.uk this gallery.
