Toon in training: Set for City

Newcastle United's first team squad trained in the Tyneside sun on Wednesday morning, with Sunday's visit of Manchester City fast approaching.

United welcome the reigning Premier League champions to St. James' Park this weekend (kick-off 4:30pm) hoping for a repeat of 2019 memorable win over Pep Guardiola's celebrated side.

The matchwinner that day, Matt Ritchie, was among the Magpies players out on the grass in the heat at Newcastle's Benton training base as head coach Eddie Howe oversaw his charges' preparations for the clash with Erling Haaland and the rest of the City's squad.

Sven Botman - who made his full United debut in Saturday's goalless draw at Brighton - trained as he seeks a first home start for his new club, while Callum Wilson, youngster Elliot Anderson and last week's social media sensation Nick Pope, who turned in an oustanding display at the Amex Stadium last time out, were also in action.

Serena Taylor brought nufc.co.uk this gallery of photographs from Wednesday's training session.
