Toon in training: City clash kicks off Carabao Cup campaign

Newcastle United kick off their Carabao Cup campaign on Wednesday night with Manchester City the visitors to St. James' Park (kick-off 8pm BST).

The Magpies could, it is fair to say, have been handed an easier draw in the third round as they set out to replicate last season's run to the final, with Pep Guardiola's men boasting a 100 per cent win record in all competitions so far this term.

But Eddie Howe's side come into the contest riding a wave of their own, having beaten Brentford at home in the Premier League, kept another clean sheet at San Siro against AC Milan in the Champions League last week and then scored eight without reply in Sunday's remarkable Premier League victory at Sheffield United.

The players who featured prominently in that sensational victory over the Blades were busy in the gym on Tuesday as United ready themselves for City's visit, while work out on the grass was also on the agenda as the Magpies continue to navigate what is a hectic autumn schedule.
