Toon in training: All set for the Saints

After booking their place in the Emirates FA Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday night, Newcastle United’s first team squad were back out on the training pitch on Thursday as attentions turn to Saturday’s trip to Southampton.

United’s 3-2 win at West Bromwich Albion in midweek set up a last-eight meeting with holders Manchester City at St. James’ Park but, with just over a fortnight until that cup clash with Pep Guardiola’s men, Steve Bruce’s side’s immediate focus is the long trip to the south coast for this weekend's Premier League fixture.

The Magpies’ victory over the Baggies came courtesy of a brace from Miguel Almirón and a Valentino Lazaro strike, and both players were back out on the grass at Newcastle’s Benton training centre along with the likes of Sean Longstaff, Joelinton and Allan Saint-Maximin.

Federico Fernández – who netted the winner against the Saints when the two sides met on Tyneside earlier this term – was also in action, while Martin Dúbravka and Isaac Hayden also trained.

Serena Taylor brought nufc.co.uk this gallery of images from Thursday’s session.
