Preston promotion party in pictures

Newcastle United are back in the Premier League.

The Magpies returned to the top flight at the first time of asking following last season's relegation - and they achieved it in some style, with a 4-1 win over Preston North End.

Rafa Benítez knew that three points would be enough to secure promotion, and Ayoze Pérez gave United the perfect start as he opened the scoring inside the first seven minutes.

Jordan Hugill quickly equalised, but Christian Atsu eased some nerves with a goal just before half time.

In the second period, Matt Ritchie scored from the spot after Paul Gallagher was sent off for deliberate handball on the goal-line, then Pérez rounded off the scoring in the 67th minute.

By then, the celebrations were already in full swing and they continued after the final whistle. Club photographer Serena Taylor brought nufc.co.uk this exclusive gallery.
