Owls game in pictures

Newcastle remain on course for promotion back to the top flight, despite defeat at Hillsborough on Saturday.

Sheffield Wednesday also hope to be playing Premier League football next season, and this victory was a boost to their play-off hopes. They had most of the chances in a goalless first half, but were almost undone on the stoke of half time by an audacious Jonjo Shelvey lob from inside his own half, which crashed back off the crossbar.

United started the second half well, however, caving out several openings, and it was against the run of play that Tom Lees gave Wednesday the lead just before the hour mark, heading home from a Ross Wallace free kick.

Then nine minutes later, Steven Fletcher met Daniel Pudil's long throw to make it 2-0. Shelvey did pull one back in the 88th minute, but it wasn't enough for Rafa Benítez's men to rescue a point.

Serena Taylor brought nufc.co.uk these pictures from Hillsborough.
