In pictures: Winning in the rain at Gateshead

It was Newcastle United's first pre-season friendly of the summer - but you wouldn't have believed it as thunder and lightning crackled over the Gateshead International Stadium and the supporters in the away section were drenched.

But the Magpies came from two goals down at the break to beat their North East neighbours 3-2, with goals from Elliot Anderson, Allan Saint-Maximin and a first senior strike from Jay Turner-Cooke.

He was one of several youngsters to enter the fray in the second half, with the likes of Michael Ndiweni, Ben Parkinson and Charlie Wiggett making their first team debuts and Jamie Miley coming on to play alongside his brother, Lewis.

Newcastle take on Rangers next, before heading to the USA for the inaugural Premier League Summer Series. And they'll round off their friendly fixtures with home games against Fiorentina and Villarreal on consecutive days on the first weekend of August in the Sela Cup, presented by VisitMalta - tickets are on sale here.

Club photographer Serena Taylor brought nufc.co.uk this gallery from Gateshead.
