In pictures: Sir Bobby Robson at Newcastle United

On Saturday, Sir Bobby Robson would have turned 90.

The former Newcastle United boss' birthday is being celebrated with a pre-match tribute from Wor Flags prior to kick-off as the Magpies - his club - take on Liverpool at St. James' Park.

Lady Elsie Robson and Sir Bobby's three sons Andrew, Paul and Mark will also be in attendance as special guests of the club on what is sure to be an emotional occasion as United and its supporters celebrate the life of their former manager.

Sir Bobby took charge of Newcastle in September 1999 and, after finishes of fourth, third and fifth in the Premier League, led Newcastle back to the Champions League as well as guiding them to a UEFA Cup semi-final prior to his departure in August 2004.

It proved to be his final club job in a glittering managerial career that had taken him from Fulham to Ipswich Town, to the England national team and on to PSV Eindhoven, Sporting Lisbon and Porto. He went on to manage Barcelona and PSV once more before coming home to take charge of United, which is where our special gallery begins.

He also returned to St. James' Park a number of times in his final years; a bust of the former England boss was unveiled there in 2008 and still stands at the players' entrance, while in July 2009 the stadium hosted the Sir Bobby Robson Trophy match.

The charity match featured players who were part the England and Germany squads when the sides met in the semi-final of the 1990 World Cup as well as some other Newcastle favourites, with proceeds going to the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation. It turned out to be his last public appearance before he passed away at the age of 76 five days later.

Here is a collection of photos which help to tell the story of Sir Bobby's time on Tyneside.
