It was a disappointing Boxing Day for Newcastle United as they slipped to a home defeat against Sheffield Wednesday.
Leading scorer Dwight Gayle saw a first half shot brilliantly tipped onto the woodwork by Kieren Westwood in the first half, but it was Newcastle netminder Karl Darlow who was the busiest of the two goalkeepers.
He made a string of saves but was beaten by a close range header from Owls skipper Glenn Loovens after 53 minutes, and the Magpies could not find a way back into the game.
