Ahead of Newcastle United’s Premier League visit of West Bromwich Albion on Saturday afternoon (kick-off 3pm GMT), we take a look at the Magpies’ best home victories against the Baggies…
Shola’s brace downs Albion (2005/06)
The Magpies secured their fifth successive league win in a row with a comfortable 3-0 win against relegation-threatened West Brom, with Shola Ameobi netting twice at St. James’ Park.
Nolberto Solano broke the deadlock on the half-hour mark for the hosts with an easy tap-in before Ameobi scored from the penalty spot towards the closing stages of the first-half.
The striker rounded things off in stoppage-time to seal United’s biggest home win of the season and a successive 3-0 win against Bryan Robson’s Baggies as Glenn Roeder’s side went on to finish in seventh place, qualifying for the Intertoto Cup.
Three goals, three points, three in a row (2004/05)
Newcastle secured back-to-back home wins with a 3-1 win, with all four goals netted in the final 20 minutes of the Premiership clash.
After a goalless 45 minutes, Darren Purse was sent off for the visitors after a second bookable offence before Patrick Kluivert smashed home United’s opener after Baggies goalkeeper Russell Hoult parried Laurent Robert’s cross into the Dutchman’s path.
James Milner then made an instant impact from the substitutes’ bench to double Newcastle’s lead before Alan Shearer confirmed three points for the Magpies with a late finish.
There was still time for Geoff Horsfield to net a consolation for Albion as United recorded a third league win in a row after wins against Blackburn Rovers and Southampton.
Sissoko’s stunner (2013/14)
Newcastle recorded their fourth successive league win with a 2-1 win against West Brom, with Moussa Sissoko netting a terrific long-range winner in front of the Gallowgate End back in November 2013.
Yoan Gouffran gave the Magpies a first-half lead with the Frenchman scoring his third goal in three games at St. James’ Park before Albion levelled shortly after the restart as Chris Brunt equalised from a tight angle.
Sissoko would write the headlines, though, as the midfielder restored the hosts’ lead minutes later with a superb drive from distance, controlling Loïc Rémy’s clever low header before firing a 25-yard effort into the roof of the net, his first goal of the campaign.
Cissé’s injury-time winner (2012/13)
Papiss Cissé secured a dramatic late victory for Newcastle as the Magpies came out on top against the Baggies in a 2-1 win in October.
Demba Ba netted his seventh goal in nine games to give Alan Pardew’s side a slender lead before Romelu Lukaku, who joined Steve Clarke's side on loan from Chelsea, brought Albion level with a header.
Despite the visitors looked the most likely to find an all-important winner, it was Newcastle who came away with three points in fortunate fashion as Sammy Ameobi’s hopeful shot struck the unwitting Cissé which flew past stranded goalkeeper Ben Foster in the dying stages of the Premier League encounter.
Shearer on the double (2002/03)
Two goals from Alan Shearer saw Newcastle recover from a goal down to secure a 2-1 win against the Baggies in October 2002.
Igor Balis opened the scoring for West Brom before Shearer netted on the stroke of half-time after rifling the ball home from Solano’s indirect free-kick, which was controversially awarded by referee Chris Foy after adjudging Baggies skipper, Derek MacInnes, had deliberately passed back to goalkeeper Joe Murphy.
Shearer netted his and Newcastle’s second in the 68th minute after another assist from Solano, an impressive header, found the prolific striker who made no mistake from close-range to seal three successive league wins following 2-0 victories against Sunderland and Birmingham City respectively.
