Back in Tyne: Five wonderful wins against Leicester

Written by Luke Vinton

Ahead of Newcastle United's Premier League visit of Leicester City on Sunday afternoon (kick-off 2.15pm BST), we take a look at some of the Magpies' most memorable victories against the Foxes at St. James' Park...

Seventh heaven as United clinch Division One title (1992/93)

It was an unforgettable day for Newcastle United supporters on May, 9th 1993 as the Magpies romped to a 7-1 victory on the final day of the 1992/93 season at St. James' Park.

United raced into a six-goal lead before half-time in front of 30,000 eager spectators, with David Kelly scoring a 17-minute treble inside 45 minutes along with Rob Lee's strike and Andy Cole's brace.

Cole added his third of the afternoon to secure a heavy rout over the Foxes as Kevin Keegan's Entertainers finished top of the Division One table with an impressive 96 points, securing promotion to the Premiership.

Shearer hat-trick completes dramatic comeback (1996/97)

Newcastle United claimed a marvellous 4-3 victory after Alan Shearer's late hat-trick saw the Magpies come from 3-1 down with 14 minutes remaining to earn a remarkable victory.

Despite Robbie Elliott's third minute opener, Newcastle found themselves trailing by two goals following second-half strikes from Matthew Elliott, Steve Claridge and Emile Heskey.

However, Shearer - who had netted six times in his previous five league contests - continued his electric goalscoring form as the prolific striker netted twice in the space of six minutes before sending the St. James' crowd wild with a 90th minute winner to seal maximum points, remaining five points behind league winners Manchester United.

McGhee and Quinn shine in nine-goal classic (1989/90)

Newcastle played out a thriller at St. James' Park as the Magpies defeated the Foxes 5-4, coming from behind on two occasions.

Mark McGhee's early opener was cancelled out by goals from Tommy Wright and Steve Walsh before Mick Quinn drew Newcastle level on the stroke of half-time.

The goals continued to flood in during the second half as Leicester's Gary McAllister and Kevin Campbell opened up a two-goal advantage with 14 minutes left but three quick-fire goals from John Gallacher, Quinn and McGhee completed a enthralling turnaround.

Speed reaches 400 Premier League games in thumping win (2003/04)

Newcastle maintained their unbeaten start to the year with a convincing 3-1 win over Leicester in February.

Gary Speed made his 400th Premier League appearance as Shola Ameobi's opener and Gerry Taggart's own goal sent the Magpies into a comfortable lead before the half-time break.

Jermaine Jenas extended Newcastle's lead in the second half before former Magpie Les Ferdinand scored a late consolation for the relegation-threatened Foxes.

United went on to finish their 2003/04 campaign unbeaten at home as Sir Bobby Robson's side secured fifth place in the Premier League, winning seven of their nine remaining matches at St. James' Park.

Absolutely glorious! (1994/95)

Despite United's front line containing the formidable striking partnership of Peter Beardsley and Andy Cole, it was two defenders who helped deliver a 3-1 victory over Leicester back in December 1994.

Summer signing Philippe Albert sent Kevin Keegan's side ahead before half-time with his first goal for the club before the game sprung into life with two goals from both sides in the opening five minutes of the second half.

After David Oldfield's early equaliser for the Foxes, the Magpies restored their lead within a matter of minutes through Steve Howey before Albert added his second goal to complete a memorable afternoon for the Belgian favourite.
