Jonjo opens account with stunning free kick (2016)

Newcastle secured a 2-0 victory at St. James' Park, with goals from captain Jamaal Lascelles and Jonjo Shelvey, his first for the Magpies, set United on their way to a third successive Championship victory.

Lascelles' brilliant header from Matt Ritchie's free kick put the home side ahead before Brighton were reduced to ten men as Sam Baldock was dismissed for a second bookable offence.

Shelvey doubled Newcastle's advantage by curling a 25-yard free kick up and around the Brighton wall, with the ball flying into the net to mark a marvellous maiden strike in Newcastle colours.

Keegan signs off in style (1984)

Newcastle ended their 1983/84 campaign on a high with a 3-1 victory on the final day of the season at St. James' Park, with fan favourite Kevin Keegan retiring after the Second Division clash with a testimonial against Liverpool five days later, famously exiting the field via helicopter.

The Magpies finished ten points clear of promotion chasers Manchester City and Grimsby Town to secure promotion to Division One, with Keegan scoring the opening goal before second half strikes from Chris Waddle and Peter Beardsley ensured the victory in front of over 36,000 spectators.

Late show seals win for promotion-chasing Magpies (1990)

With Newcastle chasing promotion to the old First Division, goals from Mick Quinn and John Gallacher secured an important 2-0 win against the Seagulls.

Both sides were in desperate need of points, with Newcastle fighting for an automatic promotion spot while Brighton were attempting to survive the drop to the third tier of English football.

With the game looking to be heading towards a goalless draw, Quinn's 83rd minute strike - his 31st goal of the season in all competition - followed by Gallacher's stoppage time sealed maximum points.

Despite finishing the league campaign in third place with 80 points, Newcastle were knocked out of the play-offs after a devastating defeat to rivals Sunderland.

Hughie's hat-trick (1930)

United's first ever meeting with Brighton resulted in a 3-0 triumph in the FA Cup fifth round, with prolific forward Hughie Gallacher scoring all three.

The Scottish striker, who went on to net an eye-catching 143 goals in 174 appearances for the Magpies, sealed Newcastle's place in the quarter-finals.

United's hope of ending a six-year wait for a third FA Cup success were distinguished in the last eight after a 1-0 defeat to Hull City in the quarter-final replay.

Brighton leek-ing goals in five-star display (1961)

United were made to wait 31 years before their next meeting with Albion - a comfortable 5-0 thrashing in the Second Division.

Ken Leek - a Welsh forward signed in the summer to replace the injured Len White - netted a hat-trick along with strikes from Ken Hale and Liam Tuchy.

Despite an immediate impact on Tyneside, Leek remained at the club for four months after failing to settle in the North east.
