Back in Tyne: Five memorable victories against Fulham

Written by Luke Vinton

Ahead of Newcastle United's Premier League visit of Fulham on Saturday night (kick-off 8pm GMT), we take a look at some of the Magpies’ memorable home wins against the Cottagers…

Cissé’s last minute winner (2012/13)

Papiss Cissé’s 92nd minute volley sealed a deserved 1-0 victory for the Magpies in April 2013, the third time Newcastle had scored a stoppage-time winner in their last four Premier League games at St James' Park.

Vurnon Anita struck the bar and Yoan Gouffran also hit the post but the hosts were rewarded for their attacking efforts as Cissé netted with one of the last kicks of the Premier League clash.

After controlling Yohan Cabaye’s shot at goal, the Senegalese forward fired his first-time effort into the bottom corner, sending the home supporters wild as United recorded their fourth successive home win.

Ben Arfa’s brilliance (2013/14)

Hatem Ben Arfa netted a terrific late winner as United secured their first Premier League win of the 2013/14 campaign with a 1-0 victory against the Cottagers in August 2013.

It looked as if Alan Pardew’s side were heading towards a successive goalless draw at St. James’ Park following a stalemate against West Ham United a week prior.

However, it was a case of deja vu following Cissé’s late goal the previous term as Ben Arfa won the game with four minutes left after the Frenchman cut in from the right flank before curling a delightful strike into the top corner in front of a joyous Gallowgate End.

Best’s brace (2011/12)

Leon Best’s second-half brace secured a 2-1 win against Martin Jol’s Whites, United’s first home win of the 2011/12 season.

The Magpies headed into the game in a confident mood following a 1-0 away win at rivals Sunderland and, after a goalless first-half, took the lead shortly after the restart following Best’s close-range finish.

The striker then doubled the Magpies’ lead after firing in from Demba Ba’s cross before Clint Dempsey set up a tense finale after halving the deficit for the 2010 Europa League finalists in the closing stages.

Robert’s wonder goal (2003/04)

Laurent Robert netted a goal of the season contender as the Magpies eased to a 3-1 win against Fulham in January 2004.

Sir Bobby Robson’s side netted twice in the first half through strikes from Andy O’Brien and Gary Speed before Robert netted United’s third in stunning style after the interval.

The winger managed to quickly adjust his feet before brilliantly back-heeling Nolberto Solano’s lofted cross into the far corner of Edwin van der Sar’s goal, finishing off a move the Frenchman began.

Newcastle’s hopes of a third successive clean sheet were extinguished when Sean Davis netted a consolation in the latter stages.

Seventh heaven for United (2002/03)

Goals from Nolberto Solano and Craig Bellamy sealed a 2-0 win against ten-men Fulham in December 2002, Newcastle’s seventh consecutive league win at St. James’ Park.

Solano broke the deadlock inside eight minutes as the Peruvian capitalised on a mis-hit clearance from Edwin van Der Dar before lobbing the ball perfectly over the Dutchman from 25 yards.

Alan Shearer was unable to double Newcastle’s lead after surprisingly missing a penalty shortly after the restart before Pierre Womé was sent off for the Cottagers following a high tackle on Andy Griffin.

United made their advantage pay as Bellamy netted his second goal in as many games as the Welshman finished clinically to seal maximum points, sending the home supporters happy before Christmas.
