Back in Tyne: Five memorable encounters against Palace

Ahead of Newcastle United's Premier League clash with Crystal Palace on Wednesday night (kick-off 7.45pm BST), we take a look at some of the Magpies' best meetings with the Eagles...

Miggy's first goal (2019/20)

Newcastle sealed a narrow 1-0 win against the Eagles in their recent encounter at St. James' Park courtesy of Miguel Almirón's late match-winner, ending the Paraguayan's long run without a goal.

With the game looking to end as a stalemate, the game burst into life as Almirón, who had failed to score in his previous 26 Premier League outings, broke his goal drought in tremendous fashion.

After Fabian Schär's impressive swinging cross from the right wing was cleverly knocked down by Andy Carroll at the back post, Almirón was left unmarked to volley the ball home before peeling away to celebrate in front of a jubilant home crowd.

Late drama in six-goal thriller (2014/2015)

United's first league win of the 2014/15 season was snatched away in the final seconds during an entertaining 3-3 draw against the Eagles.

Dwight Gayle, who would join the Magpies in 2016, netted after 29 seconds for the visitors before Daryl Janmaat's first goal for the Magpies levelled the clash.

Despite Jason Puncheon's volley restoring Palace's lead, Rolando Aarons' header - his first senior goal - levelled the Premier League contest before United defender Mike Williamson looked to have sealed the victory in the 88th minute with a close-range finish.

However, late drama would unfold as forward Wilfried Zaha slammed the ball home in the fifth minute of injury-time to deny the Magpies maximum points.

Darlow's penalty heroics on Cabaye's Tyneside return (2015/2016)

Andros Townsend and Karl Darlow were the heroes for Newcastle, who secured a vital 1-0 triumph over the Eagles.

Townsend, who would join Palace the following season, gave Newcastle the lead towards the hour mark with a tremendous 20-yard free-kick before Darlow, who was handed a chance between the sticks after injuries to Tim Krul and Rob Elliot, came to the rescue when he saved Yohan Cabaye's penalty.

The Frenchman, a former fan favourite on Tyneside, saw his spot-kick blocked by Darlow after the goalkeeper guessed correctly to push away the midfielder's attempt in front of a delighted Gallowgate End.

Merino's magic moment (2017/2018)

The Magpies left it late once again, achieving a 1-0 win courtesy of substitute Mikel Merino's 86th minute header.

Cabaye, returning to his old home ground, was fortunate to receive only a yellow card for a late challenge on DeAndre Yedlin, sparking anger from the Newcastle supporters and players.

After a lack of goalscoring opportunities against Palace, who also included former Newcastle midfielder Andros Townsend in their starting XI, Merino rose high from Matt Ritchie's corner to deliver maximum points.

United miss out on Europe despite win (1994/1995)

Kevin Keegan's side ended their league campaign on a high with a 3-2 win over Palace after a first-half masterclass from the Entertainers.

Goals from Ruel Fox, Rob Lee and Keith Gillespie gave United a comfortable advantage before the visitors set up a grandstand finish with second-half strikes from Chris Armstrong and Ray Houghton.

Newcastle hung on for three points but, despite the victory, narrowly missed out on qualifying for the UEFA Cup as Leeds United secured a 1-1 draw with Tottenham on the final day.
