Back in Tyne: Five exciting encounters at Everton

Ahead of Newcastle United's Premier League trip to Everton on Thursday night (kick-off 7.45pm GMT), we take a look at some of the Magpies' best moments at Goodison Park over the years...

A gem from Hatem (2010/11)

Hatem Ben Arfa's stunning strike was the difference back in September 2010 as United sealed their first win at Goodison Park in nine years.

Newcastle headed into the away clash on the back of a 2-0 defeat to Premier League newbies Blackpool at St. James' Park.

However, Ben Arfa, making his first start since signing on loan from Marseille, sent the Magpies into half time with a narrow lead courtesy of a fantastic long range drive which rifled past Tim Howard.

Newcastle, who also handed a debut to midfielder Cheick Tioté, survived a late scare from the hosts as Yakubu struck the post in stoppage time to move into fifth after their opening five league matches.

United pile misery on Merseyside (2001/02)

Newcastle proved too strong for Everton back in October 2001 as goals from Craig Bellamy, Nolberto Solano and Clarence Acuna secured a 3-1 win on Merseyside.

Bellamy, a summer signing from Coventry City, opened the scoring with his sixth goal of the season in all competitions before Solano doubled the visitors' advantage four minutes into the second half.

Everton defender David Weir quickly halved the deficit but, despite Everton finishing with a former trio of United players on the field in the shape of Paul Gascoigne, Duncan Ferguson and Alessandro Pistone, Acuna made sure of an impressive victory for Bobby Robson's side with a close-range finish in the final stages.

Lejeune's stoppage-time brace (2019/20)

Florian Lejeune's netted twice deep into stoppage-time as the Magpies came from two goals down to rescue an unlikely point.

After goals in either half from Moise Kean and Dominic Calvert-Lewin gave the hosts a comfortable lead but, with the clocking ticking into injury-time, Lejeune netted his first goal for Newcastle with an impressive close-range bicycle kick past former Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

A minute later, after Everton failed to clear a free-kick, the French defender took advantage and managed to scramble the ball past the goal line in a frantic penalty area to complete a remarkable turnaround.

Wilson provides the Goods (2020/21)

Callum Wilson's second-half double claimed an important 2-0 victory for United in their recent venture to Goodison Park.

After a 12-game winless streak, the Magpies broke the deadlock inside the 73rd minute as Wilson glanced a header from Jonjo Shelvey's pinpoint corner into the far left-hand corner, the striker's 50th Premier League goal.

The Coventry-born forward, who netted a brace in Newcastle's reverse league fixture against the Toffees last season, confirmed maximum points for the visitors with a composed finish, his 10th of the campaign, in the dying minutes of the encounter.

United continue sweet start against Toffees (1995/96)

Newcastle recorded their seventh league win in their opening eight Premier League matches as Kevin Keegan's side beat Everton 3-1 in October 1995.

United were in rich form ahead of their away clash on Merseyside, scoring 19 goals from their opening eight games in all competitions.

In-form striker Les Ferdinand netted his ninth goal in eight league games to get United off to the perfect start before Rob Lee's penalty extended their lead.

Paul Kitson netted Newcastle's third within a minute of his introduction from the substitutes' bench before Anders Limpar's consolation denied the visitors a fifth Premier League clean sheet.
