Back in Tyne: Five classic victories against Chelsea

Ahead of Newcastle United's Premier League visit of Chelsea on Saturday afternoon (kick-off 3pm BST), we take a look at some of the Magpies' best wins against the Blues at St. James' Park.

Sissoko's last minute winner (2012/2013)

Moussa Sissoko capped off a memorable home debut by scoring twice as Newcastle United came from behind to beat Chelsea in a thrilling 3-2 win at St. James' Park.

Jonás Gutiérrez's glancing header sent the Magpies into the lead against the Blues, managed by Rafael Benítez, before the visitors responded in the second half through Frank Lampard's long-range thunderbolt and Juan Mata's curling finish.

After an impressive debut away at Aston Villa, Sissoko continued his bright form for his new club as the Frenchman equalised for the hosts in front of the Leazes End before the midfielder grabbed the winning goal in the 90th minute as United claimed consecutive Premier League victories for the first time since April 2012.

United dismantle champions on final day (2017/2018)

Newcastle finished in tenth place on the final day of the 2017/18 season after an outstanding 3-0 victory against 2017 Premier League winners Chelsea.

United knew a victory against the Blues, managed by Antonio Conte, would ensure a top-half finish and the Magpies looked on course to achieving that after Dwight Gayle's close-range header opened the scoring in the May sunshine.

Ayoze Pérez's quick-fire brace in the second half, taking his goalscoring tally up to ten in all competitions, gave Newcastle comfortable breathing space as the Spaniard flicked in Jonjo Shelvey's low drive for his first before converting from Florian Lejeune's pass for his second.

Cissé's double continues Mourinho hoodoo (2014/2015)

Papiss Cissé was the hero for Newcastle United as the Senegalese striker's second half brace ended Chelsea's 23-game unbeaten run in a 2-1 triumph on Tyneside.

Cissé, who had previously netted a sensational double at Stamford Bridge in April 2012, tapped home the opener after pouncing on a mistake from defender Gary Cahill before notching his second in the closing stages.

However, United were reduced to ten men after Steven Taylor's second yellow card before Didier Drogba set up a tense finish after nodding in Cesc Fabregas' free-kick.

Goalkeeper Jak Alnwick kept United's lead in tact as the 21-year-old debutant, who replaced Rob Elliot as a second half substitute, tipped Diego Costa's late strike over the crossbar to ensure maximum points for the Magpies and take José Mourinho's then winless league run at St. James' Park to five matches.

Cole's brace secures five wins out of five (1994/95)

Newcastle United won their fifth of six opening league games after a six-goal thriller at St. James' Park, with the Magpies winning 4-2 against Glenn Hoddle's Blues.

Four of the goals were netted in the opening half hour, with Andy Cole and Ruel Fox scoring for the hosts, both of which were cancelled out by former United man Gavin Peacock and Paul Furlong.

However, Rob Lee's second-half strike along with Cole's second goal of the game - his sixth in five Premiership matches - ensured Newcastle's position at the summit of the top flight.

Kevin Keegan's side eventually finished in sixth place, missing out on European qualification into the UEFA Cup by a single point.

Shear class (2003/2004)

Alan Shearer's marvellous long-range strike saw Newcastle come from behind to claim an important 2-1 win against Claudio Ranieri's Blues.

Chelsea, chasing a Champions League qualification spot along with the Magpies, took the lead through Joe Cole's fifth minute strike but Sir Bobby Robson's side - who drew with Marseille in midweek - showed no signs of fatigue from their UEFA Cup semi-final as Shola Ameobi's fierce effort on the stroke of half-time levelled the clash.

The game had barely restarted before Shearer sent Newcastle into the lead, with a moment of brilliance at the expense of French defender Marcel Desailly. The England forward collected the ball on the left, holding off the World Cup winner's best defensive efforts before striking a swerving shot which flew into the net.
