2021/22 season review - November

After a rigorous recruitment process, Eddie Howe was appointed as the club's new head coach in November, beginning his quest to steer the Magpies from the relegation zone.

More changes continued to be made off the pitch as Lee Charnley left the club  following a handover period with the new ownership group, ending his seven-year period as the Magpies' managing director.

After testing positive for Covid-19 on the eve of Newcastle's visit of Brentford, the first fixture since his arrival at the club, Howe was made to watch his team's clash against Thomas Frank's side from a hotel room whilst recovering from the virus.

Despite a significant setback during Newcastle's draw against Norwich City, it would prove the beginning of an unfathomable transformation for one player on Tyneside after a frustrating first two seasons at St. James' Park.

Saturday, 6th November

Brighton & Hove Albion 1 Newcastle United 1

With Howe in attendance ahead of his official appointment as Magpies boss, Isaac Hayden cancelled out Leandro Trossard's penalty against ten-man Brighton.

Newcastle trailed at the interval through Trossard's spot-kick after a VAR check spotted a foul from Ciaran Clark on the Belgian forward but, despite a poor first-half display, the Magpies equalised in the second-half as Hayden restored parity by connecting with Clark's knockdown.

The game ended in dramatic fashion as Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was sent off for denying Callum Wilson a goalscoring opportunity. Despite defender Lewis Dunk being forced to play in goal, after Albion used all of their substitutes, the visitors were unable to test the makeshift 'keeper.

Saturday, 20th November

Newcastle United 3 Brentford 3

Newcastle were made to come from behind twice to secure a point against the Premier League new boys in a six-goal thriller at St. James' Park.

With Howe absent due to a positive Covid-19 test, Newcastle opened the scoring in early fashion through club captain Jamaal Lascelles before former Magpie Ivan Toney equalised 67 seconds later, whose shot squirmed beyond Magpies goalkeeper Karl Darlow.

Rico Henry's strike sent the Bees ahead before Joelinton scored his first goal of the campaign before the conclusion of an entertaining first-half.

Despite Lascelles' unfortunate own goal, Allan Saint-Maximin's impressive volley secured a point although the Magpies dropped to the foot of the Premier League table.

Saturday, 27th November

Arsenal 2 Newcastle United 0

Howe's first game in the Newcastle dugout ended in defeat at the Emirates Stadium as the Magpies completed a fourth successive month without a Premier League win.

Newcastle headed into the break on level terms, with Jonjo Shelvey's long-range strike tipped onto the crossbar by Gunners goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale being the visitors' main highlight of an encouraging opening 45 minutes.

However, second-half strikes from Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli handed Arsenal maximum points in North London.

Tuesday, 30th November

Newcastle United 1 Norwich City 1

After playing with ten men for over 80 minutes, Newcastle's hopes of a an eagerly-awaited first win were snatched away in the closing stages of the contest.

Following Ciaran Clark's early dismissal for pulling down Teemu Pukki when through on goal, Howe - making his first appearance in the home dugout - altered his team due to their man disadvantage, which included moving Joelinton into the middle of the park.

The Magpies, however, broke the deadlock through Wilson's second-half penalty following Billy Gilmour's handball but became the fourth team to go winless in their opening 14 matches as Pukki's emphatic volley shared the spoils.
