2021/22 season review - March

Despite a promising start to March, the Magpies' momentum took a difficult setback after suffering stoppage-time heartbreak in both away trips against Chelsea and Everton.

Wins continued to arrive for the Magpies after narrow triumphs over Brighton & Hove Albion and Southampton whilst Eddie Howe picked up the Premier League Manager of the Month for February.

However, Newcastle would suffer controversial back-to-back defeats - their first of 2022 in the English top-flight - at Stamford Bridge and Goodison Park.

While new recruits were beginning to showcase their quality, other squad members were rediscovering their bright form shown in previous seasons.

Saturday, 5th March

Newcastle United 2 Brighton & Hove Albion 1

Goals from Ryan Fraser and Fabian Schär handed Newcastle their third successive home win after a tight encounter with Graeme Potter's Seagulls.

Fraser put the hosts ahead inside 12 minutes when reacting quickest after Jacob Murphy's delicate chip bounced off the post before Schär extended Newcastle's lead two minutes later, powerfully heading in Fraser's teasing cross.

Lewis Dunk halved the deficit for Albion in the second-half but Eddie Howe's side held firm to record a fifth victory in their last six matches.

Thursday, 10th March

Southampton 1 Newcastle United 2

Bruno Guimarães netted a stunning back-heeled volley on his first Newcastle United start as the Magpies came from behind to win on the South coast.

There was also a first goal for Chris Wood, who got onto the end of Jonjo Shelvey's cross to level the clash after Stuart Armstrong's opener for Ralph Hasenhüttl's side.

Guimarães' first goal for the club would live long in the memory as the Brazilian latched onto Dan Burn's header from Matt Targett's corner before delightfully flicking the ball past former Newcastle shot-stopper Fraser Forster in front of 3,300 delirious away fans.

Sunday, 13th March

Chelsea 1 Newcastle United 0

Despite a spirited performance on the road, Newcastle failed to extend their unbeaten run to ten league matches as Kai Havertz's late winner condemned the Magpies to defeat.

The German forward was fortunate to remain on the pitch during the first-half after catching Dan Burn with a wild elbow with the Blues man receiving a yellow card.

Jacob Murphy was denied a penalty in the second-half after the winger was hurled down by Trevoh Chalobah, with referee David Coote rejecting the visitors' claim for a spot-kick.

With the contest approaching a stalemate, Newcastle were handed a tough blow in the final minutes as Havertz broke the deadlock, neatly controlling Jorginho's lofted pass before firing past Martin Dúbravka.

Thursday, 17th March

Everton 1 Newcastle United 0

After conceding late on at Chelsea, Alex Iwobi's 99th minute winner sealed a disappointing 1-0 defeat for United against ten-man Everton.

The visitors controlled the majority of possession but were unable to find an important breakthrough, with play paused due to a protestor attaching himself to a goalpost.

The Toffees were reduced to ten men in the closing stages as Allan received a straight red card following a dangerous challenge on Allan Saint-Maximin but it was Frank Lampard's side who would grab three points in the dying seconds through Iwobi's stoppage-time effort.
