Woolston's England Aim

Newcastle goalkeeper Paul Woolston is hoping to help England take another step towards European Under-17 Championships qualification on Monday

Magpies goalkeeper Paul Woolston is hoping to help England take another step towards qualifying for the UEFA European Under-17 Championships on Monday.

The 16-year-old shot-stopper is set to start again in goal for the Young Lions when they take on Macedonia in their second qualifying game, having been given the number one shirt for Saturday's win over Cyprus.

He was only denied a clean sheet in the 4-1 win by a late penalty after Reece Oxford's dismissal but the North Shields-born keeper - who made national headlines when he kept Manchester United at bay on his Barclays Under-21 Premier League debut for Newcastle while still at school - was more concerned about the three points.

"We won, which is the most important thing, especially in a competition like this where it is crucial," he told TheFA.com from the team hotel in Paphos. "We performed really well. The penalty we conceded was a bit soft, but we controlled the game.

"I would have preferred a clean sheet, but the win was all that mattered as a team.

"It would have given me a little bit more belief going into the next game if I had a clean sheet - but in a way it makes me more determined.

"If I am selected to play on Monday, then my target will be to ensure that I keep one there - but it's all about the team performing well."

England also face France on Thursday as they look to progress to the Elite Qualifying Round. Next year's Championships take place in Bulgaria in May.
