West Brom v Newcastle: Key Moments

Written by Newcastle Utd

The moments that mattered from Newcastle's draw at the Hawthorns against West Bromwich Albion

By Dan King - Newcastle United Club Reporter

West Bromwich Albion 1 (Jones 64)
Newcastle United 1 (Gouffran 8)

SECOND HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons90+4mins: The whistle blows and Newcastle have picked up a useful point at the Hawthorns. After a superb first half display, United looked capable of getting all three but the Baggies were much better after the break. It's still a result the Magpies would probably have taken before the game, though, and moves them a step closer to safety.

SUB-MDC-icons90+3mins: As Newcastle prepare to defend another Baggies corner, Dan Gosling comes on for Cabaye. Elliot comes and claims the corner.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons90+2mins: Sissoko is booked for kicking the ball away after a free-kick is harshly given against Cabaye.

90mins: There will be four minutes of stoppage time.

SUB-MDC-icons89mins: West Brom make a double substitution as Lukaku comes off for Jerome Thomas and Fortune is replaced by Markus Rosenberg.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons86mins: Captain Cabaye becomes the first player booked.

80mins: Cabaye's right-wing corner drops for Ameobi, who allows the ball to come down and then shoots but his effort strikes one of his team-mates to go out for a goal kick.

SUB-MDC-icons77mins: Hatem Ben Arfa replaces Massadio Haidara in a move which sees Jonas Gutierrez drop to left-back.

72mins: Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa concedes a needless corner with a shocking backpass and he is pleased to see McAuley head wide at the far post from Brunt's flag-kick.

SUB-MDC-icons70mins: Shola Ameobi is introduced in place of Gouffran, whose goal gave Newcastle the lead.

68mins: It takes a fine save from Elliot to deny Darlington-born Morrison as the midfielder heads goalwards from a left-wing cross but sees the Magpies keeper acrobatically fly to his left to push it over the bar.

66mins: Gouffran goes for an ambitious lob from almost 40 yards but his effort sails wide, although it did have Foster retreating.

GOAL-MDC-icons64mins - WEST BROM GOAL (1-1): Morrison prods the ball through to Lukaku and although Taylor does enough to stop the big Belgian from turning, Billy Jones is there to profit as the ball breaks kindly for him and he slots past Elliot from close range to level matters. Newcastle looked like they may have withstood the West Brom onslaught but now they have been pegged back.

62mins: Cabaye's left-wing delivery from a free-kick evades everyone until Gouffran comes flying in at the far post but can't steer it towards goal.

57mins: West Brom have stepped it up at the start of this half, forcing a string of corners, but Newcastle have coped so far as James Morrison floats a cross-cum-shot wide of the far post.

51mins: Another Baggies corner causes problems as Brunt's delivery from the right is headed goalwards by Romelu Lukaku but his effort crashes back off the bar before McAuley stabs the rebound wide.

49mins: Graham Dorrans' left-wing corner is met by McAuley but headed over the top at full stretch by the lanky defender.

47mins: Long's first action is to head the ball down to Marc-Antoine Fortune, whose powerful shot is fielded by Rob Elliot but then fumbled. Long follows up but Elliot bravely throws himself at the ball to block.

SUB-MDC-iconsWHISTLE-MDC-icons46mins: Steve Clarke has introduced Shane Long at the break in place of Claudio Yacob as Newcastle kick off the second half. The Baggies are now playing with three up front.

FIRST HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons45+2mins: James Perch slides in and appears to win the ball from Jones just inside the box but the referee adjudges it to be a foul. However, the assistant referee flags to indicate that any offence was inside the area. After much arguing and confusion, a free-kick is awarded and West Brom waste it. The whistle blows straight afterwards and Newcastle deservedly lead at the break although the home side now feel aggrieved as they head down the tunnel. Click here for the half-time report.

45mins: There will be two minutes of stoppage time and the hosts will be pleased to hear the whistle, such has been Newcastle's control over this game.

37mins: Cisse evades the West Brom defence again as Cabaye dinks the ball over the top but the striker can't get enough on the ball to poke it past Foster. Newcastle could be two or three goals to the good but it's still on a knife-edge at the moment.

35mins: An awful backpass by Olsson is siezed upon by Cisse, but the Senegalese star's attempted chipped shot doesn't drop in time to take it into the net and instead it floats narrowly over - much to the relief of the Baggies defender.

33mins: Cisse sends a fine 22-yard volley straight at Foster after Gouffran had climbed above Goran Popov and received a knock to the head in the process. He looks a little groggy but after attention from physio Dave Henderson and doctor Paul Catterson, he gets to his feet.

32mins: Chris Brunt's right-wing corner is met by Jonas Olsson at the far post but he heads wide.

28mins: As the Newcastle fans break into a chant of 'Ryan Taylor, over the wall' in tribute to the stricken star who has been ruled out for several months with another cruciate injury, Sissoko heads Cabaye's raking long pass into the path of Cisse and the frontman's header just lacks the power to beat Foster.

24mins: Two chances for Newcastle as first Gouffran clips the ball over the defence to the rampaging Steven Taylor, who beats the offside trap but is denied by the keeper, then Cabaye hits a rasping low volley after Mathieu Debuchy's cross was half-cleared and Foster turns it around the post. United have been excellent so far.

23mins: Billy Jones is lucky to escape without a booking as he blocks Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa off in full flight. Instead, referee Mike Jones appears to send the Baggies man over to apologise to the grounded defender and that saves him from a yellow card.

11mins: Another wonderful spell of possession from the Magpies ends in Cabaye lining up a shot from 25 yards which dips and swerves and drops just over the bar with Ben Forster a very worried man.

GOAL-MDC-icons8mins - NEWCASTLE GOAL (0-1): Yoan Gouffran gives Newcastle the lead after a lovely Magpies move. Alan Pardew's men popped the ball around nicely before Yohan Cabaye found Cisse with a clever disguised pass. The striker took the ball in his stride, checked back and delivered the type of cross that he would have loved to have been on the end of. Instead, Gouffran was there and he glanced home with his head in front of the travelling supporters.

6mins: Papiss Cisse flicks the ball into Moussa Sissoko's path and it takes a vital challenge from the covering Gareth McAuley to prevent the Frenchman from steamrollering towards goal.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons1min: The teams emerged from the Hawthorns tunnel to Insomnia by Faithless but Newcastle United can surely avoid any sleepless nights with three points today against the Baggies. The Magpies are in their burgundy change kit with the hosts in their traditional colours and, after a minute's applause for long-serving former West Brom kit man Dave Matthews who recently passed away, the home side get us underway as the sun shines in the Midlands.
