Watson Reaction To Man United Defeat

Written by Newcastle Utd

Under-18s Coach Dave Watson speaks to nufc.co.uk after Saturday's narrow Academy defeat to Manchester United

By Paul Reece

Dave Watson believes his side were unlucky not to come away from Manchester United with a result after a disappointing 2-1 defeat at Carrington.

Watson's men were made to rue missed chances as goals from Ben Pearson and Jack Rudge cancelled out Dan Taylor's header.

Jonathan Mitchell saved a late penalty after bringing down Sam Byrne in the area but Premier League Group D leaders fell to a rare defeat.

Watson said: "The lads put in a really good effort and with a bit more quality we could have came away with something.

"It was a decent performance but at times we just lacked that little bit of quality that was needed.

"There was some good football and it is always tough against Manchester United. They had the majority of the youth side which played Chelsea in the FA Youth Cup semi-final."

United headed into the game looking to extend their six point lead at the top of the table but were missing a number of key players.

Adam Campbell, Dennis Knight, Remie Streete and JJ Hooper were all absent while trialist Brad Kilburn played another 90 minutes.

"We didn't create many clear cut chances and we didn't have many shots but we are still in a good position," said Watson.

"We just need to keep going between now and the end of the season and Brad did well again today and had a decent game."
