Fiorentina's 2-1 Group Eight win over Lecce sees them top United's group, with six points from their two games, and means the best Newcastle can now hope for is to qualify in second place from their group.
That remains mathematically possible but would require a big win from The Magpies against Lecce on Saturday, together with some unlikely results elsewhere in the tournament.
In Group Seven, Roma all but booked their place in the last 16 with a 5-0 win over Taranto, giving them maximum points and a goals for column of ten. Jedinstvo and Midtjylland drew 1-1 in the other game.
Group Nine saw AC Milan held to their second 0-0 draw from two games - this time Sassuolo held them - while Nagoya Grampus beat Stabaek 4-1 to top the table.
Genoa lead Group Ten after a 1-0 win over Parma. Citta Marino Calcio drew 1-1 with Nordsjaelland.
Something has to give in Group Eleven, where Palermo and Prato both have maximum points ahead of their meeting on Saturday. Palermo beat Lumezzane 3-0 and Prato were 1-0 winners over Emergence Brera Gabon.
And another team with six points out of six is Siena, who lead the way in Group Twelve after a 1-0 win over Napoli. Meanwhile, Spezia beat Kallon 2-0.
