United To Face Rangers in Pre-Season Friendly

Written by Newcastle Utd

Magpies head to Glasgow on August 7

NEWCASTLE United will play Scottish Premier League champions Rangers in a pre-season friendly at Ibrox on Saturday August 7th (3pm kick-off).

The game against Walter Smith's men will be the first meeting of any kind between the two sides for six years and United's first trip to Ibrox since 1994.

United spoiled the party at Ally McCoist's testimonial back in August 1993, when goals from Andy Cole and Scott Sellars sealed a 2-1 win in front of a 40,000-plus crowd.

And just a year later, the Magpies returned to Glasgow to take part in the four-team Ibrox Cup alongside Rangers, Manchester United and Sampdoria.

Newcastle then had the upper hand 10 years on in 2004 when goals from Alan Shearer, Craig Bellamy, Olivier Bernard and Kieron Dyer saw Sir Bobby Robson's side run out 4-2 winners at St. James' Park in the NewcastleGateshead Cup.

The match - which comes just seven days before the start of the new Premier League season - will also see Toon striker Peter Lovenkrands return to Ibrox for the first time since leaving in 2006.

The Dane spent six seasons with Rangers, scoring 54 goals in the process, including a last-minute winner in the 2002 Scottish Cup final against Old Firm rivals Celtic.

After confirmation of the fixture, Lovenkrands said: "I can't wait to run out at Ibrox in front of both sets of supporters - it will be a great moment for me.

"Obviously, having played there for six years, the place holds great memories for me and as long as the boss selects me to play, it will be a huge buzz.

"It should be a great afternoon for all concerned and a team like Rangers gives us a real pre-season challenge."

Ticket details for August's friendly will follow in due course on nufc.co.uk
