Turkish Delight - Then Despair

Young Daniel Barlaser helped Turkey reach the final of the Mercedes-Benz Aegean Cup but they lost out on penalties

By Dan King - Newcastle United Club Reporter

Magpies youngster Daniel Barlaser helped Turkey's under-17s reach the final of the Mercedes-Benz Aegean Cup, but suffered penalty heartache against France.

Gateshead-born winger Barlaser, whose father is Turkish, was called up for the January tournament and was heavily involved as the host nation topped Group A with three wins out of three.

They beat Greece 2-0, Norway 1-0 and Denmark 4-0 before facing the French in Manisa. With the scores level at 1-1, the match went to spot-kicks and Les Bleus prevailed.

Barlaser, who turned 16 last month, has broken into Newcastle's under-18 team this season and scored his first goal against Stoke in September.

The former Swalwell Juniors player made his international bow at under-16 level against Italy in October.
