Toon Teens Beat Congo

Written by Newcastle Utd

Alex Gilliead and Greg Olley were on target as Newcastle kept their Torneo di Viareggio hopes alive with a win over Congo

By Dan King - Newcastle United Club Reporter

Goals from Alex Gilliead and Greg Olley kept Newcastle's hopes alive in the Torneo di Viareggio as they beat Congo's under-17 team in Strettoia.

United had lost 2-1 to AC Milan in their opening group game but picked up three points on Thursday afternoon, with Gilliead opening the scoring in the 75th minute.

He had joined the squad in Italy after returning from international duty with England under-17s in the Algarve Tournament and wasted no time in showing his worth as he headed home from Brandon Miele's corner.

Congo levelled ten minutes later but blond bombshell Olley scored with virtually the last kick of the game with a goal which would have made the watching Peter Beardsley proud.

He rounded three defenders and the goalkeeper to snatch a dramatic victory and set the Magpies up perfectly for Saturday's final group match against Empoli.

Newcastle United: Jak Alnwick, Alex Nicholson (sub Jamie Sterry), Remie Streete (sub Alex Kitchen), Lubo Satka, Lee Desmond, Alex Gilliead, Steven Logan (Macauley Booth), Brandon Miele, Rolando Aarons (sub Tom Heardman), Adam Campbell (sub Greg Olley), Jonathyn Quinn
