Toney Ruled Out For Ten To 12 Weeks

Teenage striker Ivan Toney has suffered an ankle ligament injury in training this week

Teenage striker Ivan Toney has been ruled out for ten to 12 weeks with an ankle ligament injury.

The 19-year-old, who has made four substitute appearances for Newcastle this season following his arrival from Northampton last summer, suffered the setback in training earlier this week.

And the promising frontman, who was named as the Barclays Under-21 Premier League player of the month for September, is currently on crutches.

His most recent appearance came in last week's thrilling 3-3 draw against Manchester United.

"On Monday, we had a training match and I just went over on it," he told nufc.co.uk. "I went up for a header and landed badly.

"At that moment it felt very painful, then the pain started to go down but I had a scan and it will keep me out for up to 12 weeks.

"But I can only come back stronger and the hard work starts now.

"It happens - that's football, you have your ups and downs. I've just got to come back fighting again."

Toney was loaned out to League One Barnsley in November, but was recalled after scoring two goals in seven starts for the Tykes.

Both of those goals came in his final three appearances and he admitted: "That's obviously a good sign, getting recalled - not just because of injuries but also because I was doing well.

"But unfortunately this has happened, so I've just got to start the road to recovery and hopefully the head coach will keep seeing what he was seeing in me and keeps putting me on."
