Tiote: 'We Deserved A Draw'

Written by Newcastle Utd

Cheick Tiote believes Newcastle were hard done by against West Ham, insisting they should have earned a point

By Anthony Marshall - Newcastle United Managing Editor

Cheick Tiote believes Newcastle United were hard done by at the Boleyn Ground on Saturday, insisting the Magpies should have come away with at least a point.

United were far from at their best in East London, but matched the Hammers throughout and threatened on a handful of occasions through Spanish starlet Ayoze Perez.

However, Aaron Cresswell's fortuitous second half effort proved decisive as teammate Cheikhou Kouyate's shanked shot fell straight into his path inside the penalty area, with the full-back then applying the finish.

And Tiote - making his first appearance in seven games following injury - felt the visitors deserved more for their endeavours.

"Everybody is disappointed because we lost but we are trying to take the positives we can from the game," Newcastle's vice-captain told nufc.co.uk following the final whistle.

"It wasn't our best game but we did not deserve to lose. A draw would have been fair and would have been good for both teams.

"They did not do anything special to win the game and the goal was lucky.

"Their player missed his shot and we didn't follow the other player, who went in to score. It was very frustrating because it was not a good goal.

"But this is football and we will take the good parts of our performance into Tuesday night at Burnley."

The result put an end to United's seven-game unbeaten run, which included six consecutive victories and four clean sheets in a row.

Tiote believes that should put Saturday's loss into context, but is determined to bounce back immediately when the Magpies travel to Burnley on Tuesday.

"It is important to remember that we won our last six games," said the Ivorian.

"We are in a good position, in good condition and if we win on Tuesday then one defeat in this game is not too bad.

"We will do everything we can to come back against Burnley - it is a very important game."
