Three Newcastle United youngsters played for England under-18s as they beat Russia 2-0 in Moscow on Monday.

Adam Armstrong captained the Young Lions while Freddie Woodman was in goal and Daniel Barlaser started in midfield to make his England debut.

And it was Armstrong who opened the scoring with a 63rd minute penalty for his eighth goal in seven games for Neil Dewsnip's side this season.

The 18-year-old had already tested Timur Akmurzin with a third-minute strike from the edge of the area, then forced the Russian goalkeeper into a save from 18 yards out.

And after dancing through the home defence, he was denied again by Akmurzin in the 28th minute when his shot was tipped over the bar.

At the other end, Woodman kept out a Nikolai Obolski free-kick and a long-range effort from Georgi Melkadze, both within the opening ten minutes, then thwarted Vitaliy Stezhko shortly before half time.

Armstrong converted from the spot after Fulham teenager Patrick Roberts was fouled in the box, then Roberts got on the scoresheet himself with a curler from 25 yards.

In the 89th minute, Woodman made sure of his clean sheet with another save, this time to frustrate Sergey Serchenkov after the Russian forward had broken through.

Woodman and Barlaser both played the whole game while Armstrong was substituted five minutes before the end.

England under-18s will play against Russia again on Wednesday.
