Defender James Tavernier has signed for Championship side Wigan Athletic for an undisclosed fee.

The Academy product, 22, spent most of last season on loan with Rotherham and helped them to win the League One play-off final at Wembley last month.

He made his Newcastle debut against Peterborough United in the League Cup in September 2009, then played in the same competition against Accrington the following season before enjoying an impressive loan spell with neighbours Gateshead.

In 2011/12, he spent time with Carlisle, Sheffield Wednesday and MK Dons then returned to Tyneside for the next campaign, which saw him make seven appearances for Alan Pardew's side.

That included a Barclays Premier League bow at Reading, an excellent Capital One Cup display at Manchester United and four Europa League outings.

He started last season on loan with Shrewsbury before that was cut short due to injury and he linked up with Rotherham.

In total he made ten appearances for Newcastle while he boasts league experience which belies his tender years as a result of his six loan moves.

The Club wishes him well.
