Swansea v Newcastle: Key Moments

Written by Newcastle Utd

Newcastle's winning run was ended by a slick Swansea side at the Liberty Stadium on Wednesday night

By Dan King - Newcastle United Digital Editor

At the Liberty Stadium

Swansea City 3 (Dyer 45+1, Debuchy og 67, Shelvey 82)
Newcastle United 0

SECOND HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons90+3mins: Newcastle's four-match winning streak has been ended by an on-song Swans side here in South Wales. United would have been happy enough with the first half until Nathan Dyer scored in stoppage time and then saw two penalty appeals waved away before an unfortunate Mathieu Debuchy goal and a strike from the game's outstanding player, Jonjo Shelvey, sealed the win for the hosts. Credit to the Magpies supporters, though, who will have to endure a long journey home but were still singing at the final whistle. Click here for the match report.

90mins: There will be three minutes added on.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons86mins: Dyer draws in Haidara and the Frenchman takes the bait, diving in as the wide man nicks the ball away and the Newcastle man is booked.

SUB-MDC-icons84mins: Former Newcastle winger Wayne Routledge is given a run-out against his old club, coming on for Pozuelo.

GOAL-MDC-icons82mins - SWANSEA CITY GOAL (3-0): Shelvey gets the goal that his performance has deserved to kill off any hopes of a Newcastle comeback. The midfielder shoots from 25 yards and Krul got a hand to it but couldn't prevent it from going past him.

SUB-MDC-icons77mins: Here's Newcastle's final change - Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa replaces Williamson.

75mins: Shelvey's impressive night almost takes another turn as he slides in to win the ball from Williamson before curling a shot towards the corner only for Krul to push it away.

74mins: Dyer dinks a clever ball towards Shelvey, who goes for a spectacular volley but miscues it and smashes it well wide. He's been good tonight but that won't surprise Alan Pardew, who helped to bring him through at Charlton. Tonight's attendance is 20,457.

SUB-MDC-icons71mins: Hernandez makes way for Roland Lamah in Swansea's second change of the night.

SUB-MDC-icons68mins: Gabriel Obertan replaces Ameobi as Newcastle look to respond but only a good defensive header from under his own crossbar from Haidara prevents the Welsh side adding a third.

GOAL-MDC-icons67mins - SWANSEA CITY GOAL (2-0): Another penalty appeal for Newcastle is waved away by Howard Webb as Gouffran goes down claiming a shove in the back from Williams. Again, the Swans break and Shelvey breaks clear. Debuchy races back to try and put him off and Krul races out, seemingly doing enough to block the ball only for it to strike the hapless Debuchy and trickle over the line.

65mins: Cabaye floats a lovely ball towards Gouffran and from his touch, Ameobi's shot is blocked by Ashley Williams. As they are always liable to do, Swansea then counter rapidly and Debuchy makes a great tackle to snuff out the danger.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons58mins: Brilliant play from Debuchy sees him win the ball and slide it towards Gouffran, who digs out a cross. Remy controls and makes room, only for his goalbound shot to be blocked by Davies - perhaps with his arm. A frustrated Debuchy then dives in to try and win the ball back from Pablo Hernandez but it's a poor challenge and he is deservedly booked. But should Newcastle have had a penalty?

SUB-MDC-icons56mins: Newcastle have scored from corners in their last two games but not on this occasion as Cabaye finds Remy but the striker heads over. That gives Pardew the opportunity to make his first change of the night - Massadio Haidara is on for Santon.

51mins: Davide Santon's cross is half-cleared as far as Cabaye, whose shot is deflected into the path of Ameobi who turns and shoots but Vorm gets down well to hold. Then as Swansea go up the other end, Shelvey's 25 yard strike whistles just wide of Krul's goal.

47mins: De Guzman crosses from the right and Dyer arrives at the far post, beating Debuchy to the punch, but heads straight at a well-positioned Krul.

46mins: The hosts get the second half started, with Newcastle now attacking towards the end in which around 1,000 of their fans are housed.

FIRST HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons45+2mins: It's half time and Alan Pardew's team talk will have been altered by Nathan Dyer's stoppage time goal. Newcastle looked fairly comfortable despite Swansea having most of the ball but the forward's driven effort means they're now trailing. Click here for the half time report.

GOAL-MDC-icons45+1mins - SWANSEA CITY GOAL (0-1): Right on the stroke of half time, Swansea take the lead. Pozuelo's dangerous cross is palmed away by Krul but substitute Dyer is lurking to drill the ball home from 12 yards or so.

45mins: There will be two minutes of stoppage time as fourth official Mike Jones holds up the board.

43mins: Coloccini tackles Jonathan de Guzman to spark a quick counter but Gouffran's touch just lets him down at the last minute and the chance is gone.

41mins: Cheick Tiote makes a big tackle on the edge of the Swansea box and finds Ameobi, who chests the ball into the path of Remy. He makes space but his shot is blocked, and Cabaye also sees a defender get in the way as he follows up before Tiote's 22 yard drive flies off target.

38mins: Dyer gets a free kick after Fabricio Coloccini's tackle 25 yards out but Shelvey's effort cannons into the Newcastle wall.

32mins: Ameobi wins a free kick after a strong run but Cabaye fires over the bar.

30mins: Out of virtually nothing, Remy turns and cracks in a left-footed effort which Vorm is pleased to see go three or four feet wide in the end.

SUB-MDC-icons29mins: Swansea are forced into an early change as the lively Vazquez comes off injured to be replaced by Nathan Dyer. Then as United attack, it needs a great tackle from Ben Davies to prevent Shola Ameobi from getting in a shot from ten yards out.

26mins: Chico Flores advances and tries his luck from range but it's easy for Krul and the Newcastle keeper will be happy enough if Swansea have to keep on shooting from that far out.

21mins: England international Jonjo Shelvey turns and shoots from 25 yards out but his effort is well off target.

18mins: Krul is at full stretch as Vazquez flashes a shot across goal following a clever pass from Alejandro Pozuelo. The hosts, as one might expect, have dominated possession but that was the closest they've been to scoring so far.

12mins: A fine save from Vorm denies Loic Remy - the striker hung in the air as Sissoko crossed the ball in from the right but the Dutch keeper sprung to his left to push it away.

10mins: Moussa Sissoko finds Yohan Cabaye and the in-form midfielder, clearly full of confidence, tries to lob Michel Vorm from around 50 yards. Alas, it sails off target.

5mins: The Swans have started well and a sustained spell of pressure ends in Alvaro Vazquez heading straight at Tim Krul, although in truth the Newcastle goalkeeper was never troubled.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons1min: On this cold Wednesday night in South Wales, Newcastle United are looking for a fifth successive Barclays Premier League victory but face tough opposition in the form of Capital One Cup holders Swansea City. Before kick-off, Alan Pardew was forced into a late reshuffle as Papiss Cisse picked up a heel injury, meaning Paul Dummett stepped up to the bench. The Magpies, in their denim change kit, take kick-off.
