Sunderland v Newcastle: Key Moments

Written by Newcastle Utd

The Tyne-Wear derby as it happened at the Stadium of Light as Sunderland picked up their first win of the season

By Dan King - Newcastle United Digital Editor

Sunderland 2 (Fletcher 5, Borini 85)
Newcastle United 1 (Debuchy 58)

SECOND HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons90+4mins: Sunderland kept the ball by the corner flag for the majority of the added time and the best United can muster is weak Cabaye effort as the Black Cats hold on to record their first victory of the season. Indeed it's now two successive derby victories for the Wearsiders, with Fabio Borini the hero for his superb winning goal. The Newcastle players look devastated, none more so than Geordie boy Paul Dummett, but nothing can change the result now. It's finished Sunderland 2 Newcastle 1. Click here for the match report.

90mins: Fourth official Kevin Friend signals four minutes of added time.

89mins: Krul's long punt is headed on by Shola Ameobi and then nodded back towards his own goal by John O'Shea but the defender gets too much on it and almost sends it past Westwood. However, the keeper reacts well to grab the ball just before it crosses the line.

SUB-MDC-icons87mins: Yoan Gouffran is replaced by Sammy Ameobi as United look to respond.

GOAL-MDC-icons85mins - SUNDERLAND GOAL (2-1): Out of nothing, Sunderland are ahead for a second time. Colback played the ball into the feet of Altidore, who laid it off for Borini to strike a stunning effort beyond Krul from 22 yards. The goalkeeper got the slightest of touches but the sheer power took it past him and the home crowd are on their feet again.

84mins: Ben Arfa drifts past Andrea Dossena but as he goes for goal, Colback throws himself in the way to charge down the shot.

81mins: Surprisingly, Fletcher takes the free-kick and blasts it straight into the wall. United can breathe a sigh of relief.

80mins: Gouffran tries to be too clever and concedes possession to Altidore, who advances towards goal and is brought down just outside the box by Dummett. Larsson stands over the free kick in a dangerous area.

78mins: So close to another derby goal for Shola Ameobi. He picked up the ball 22 yards from goal, steadied himself and shot with his strike zipping inches wide.

SUB-MDC-icons77mins: Phil Bardsley, who picked up a knock a couple of minutes earlier, is replaced by Ondrej Celustka in Sunderland's final change.

76mins: Yoan Gouffran plays the ball to Santon, who takes a clever touch to take him past a defender and then sees his blistering low drive go just wide of the near post.

73mins: Santon, Ben Arfa and Cabaye work a neat triangle before the latter eventually goes for goal from 22 yards but the shot is easily gathered by Westwood.

SUB-MDC-icons70mins: Shola Ameobi is on for Newcastle, looking to add to his scrapbook of derby goals. He replaces Loic Remy while Sunderland also make a substitution with Ki Sung-Yueng on for Lee Cattermole.

SUB-MDC-icons69mins: Gus Poyet makes his first change of the day as he brings on Fabio Borini for Adam Johnson. And the Italian is involved immediately as Debuchy slips and the Liverpool loanee gets in a low shot which Krul almost allows to slip past him but gathers just before it reaches the line.

67mins: Carlos Cuellar makes two vital blocks as he first gets in the way of Santon's low shot then heads away from the Italian as the ball is crossed in.

63mins: Ben Arfa, suddenly having a say on this game after a quiet first half, finds Santon on the left then upon demanding the ball back, tees up Remy who in turn plays in Cabaye to shoot. His 20 yard effort flies agonisingly wide of the goal. The home crowd seem edgy now.

61mins: Johnson's corner goes all the way to Colback, who rolls the ball to Larsson but the Swede's shot goes over the bar.

GOAL-MDC-icons58mins - NEWCASTLE GOAL (1-1): Mathieu Debuchy has chosen the perfect time to score his first goal for Newcastle United. The Frenchman had overlapped Cabaye seconds earlier but the ball failed to reach him. However when Ben Arfa ran at the defence and drilled the ball towards the bar post, the right-back was still there to side-foot home from six yards and level matters. United were finally starting to ask questions of Sunderland and suddenly this game has a very different feel to it.

54mins: Altidore robs Cabaye and races towards goal but is denied by a tackle from Dummett. The home fans appeal for a penalty but Probert is having none of it and Debuchy makes a great interception of his own as the ball breaks in Sunderland's favour.

SUB-MDC-iconsWHISTLE-MDC-icons46mins: Papiss Cisse is on at half-time for Newcastle in place of Sissoko as the Magpies kick off the second half. Cisse is still looking for his first league goal of the season - what a day this would be to get it.

FIRST HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons45+2mins: Sunderland are ahead at half-time in the Tyne-Wear derby, with Steven Fletcher's fifth-minute header the difference. Since then, Newcastle have perhaps shaded it but will need to do more if they are to come from behind and prevent the Wearsiders from claiming a rare home win over their bitter rivals. Click here for the half time report.

45mins: There will be a minimum of two minutes of added time.

44mins: Sissoko is fouled on the left and Cabaye arcs the ball towards Williamson, but Westwood again does well to claim the ball. The former Carlisle goalkeeper has been commanding so far and that has made a big difference to his defence.

38mins: Tiote is fouled and Ben Arfa lines up the free-kick. His strike is close enough to have Westwood diving across his goal but ends up going two or three yards wide.

37mins: Again, Newcastle string a few passes together and this time a good move ends as Santon switches play to Debuchy, whose cross flashes across goal. Sunderland are struggling to cope when United get the ball down - it's just not happening often enough.

31mins: This time, Cabaye's deep delivery finds its way to Tiote who skips past Larsson with ease but then puts a disappointing cross-cum-shot into the crowd.

30mins: Cabaye's corner from the left is headed across goal by Mike Williamson and then met by Dummett but Sunderland clear their lines. However United force another flag kick as they begin to increase the pressure on the home side.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons28mins: After a rash and mistimed tackle on Jack Colback, Cabaye is deservedly booked by Lee Probert.

23mins: Cabaye has been busy for United and cuts inside before shooting from 20 yards but his low effort flashes just the wrong side of the near post as he tried to catch the goalkeeper out.

22mins: Santon does well on the left to find Cabaye, who pings a wonderful ball into the box. Moussa Sissoko looks like he's about to head home but Westwood bravely races from his line to nudge it away from the big midfielder.

21mins: Cabaye floats a corner over from the left and aims for Mathieu Debuchy, waiting just outside the area. He goes for a spectacular volley but it's blocked by a red and white shirt.

17mins: Fletcher gets on the end of a neat one-two to crack a shot goalwards and Krul makes a fine parry. Dummett looks in pole position to clear the loose ball but hesitates and the youngster is a relieved man as Altidore fails to test Krul.

16mins: A Cabaye free-kick, struck low and hard towards the bottom corner from almost 30 yards, almost creeps in but Kieren Westwood just about manages to get down to it. It's been a good response from the Magpies.

14mins: Johnson works space on the Sunderland left and sends over another lovely delivery which Fletcher tries to divert goalwards but this time he's under too much pressure to do anything more than glance wide.

13mins: Hatem Ben Arfa drops deep to receive the ball from Santon and after a little shimmy, shoots from distance but like Cabaye before him, he sees his shot end up in the stand.

11mins: For the first time today, Newcastle get the ball down and play and after good combination between Santon and Yohan Cabaye, the latter tries his luck from 25 yards but his effort flies over the bar.

GOAL-MDC-iconsYellow-Card-MDC-icons5mins - SUNDERLAND GOAL (1-0): The Black Cats take an early lead and it's Steven Fletcher, such a dominant presence in the air, who gets up above Paul Dummett to head home. Jozy Altidore had won a corner and Sunderland took it short before Adam Johnson clipped the ball over from the right. It sailed over Tim Krul and Davide Santon before Fletcher connected with it to send the home fans wild. It had been a somewhat nervy start from the Magpies and now they find themselves a goal down. Fletcher is booked for his celebrations.
