Alan Smith scored his first goal for MK Dons - and ended his five-year wait to get on the scoresheet - as he helped MK Dons beat Sheffield United on Saturday.
The ex-England international has yet to score a competitive goal for Newcastle but notched for the League One outfit in his 15th appearance to give them a vital win.
It guaranteed their place in the play-offs and came thanks to a 16th minute header from Smith, whose last goal came against Roma in the Champions League back in 2007.
Elsewhere in League One, Nile Ranger played the full 90 minutes as Sheffield Wednesday beat Carlisle at Hillsborough.
He missed a decent chance to score for the Owls and was booked as Dave Jones' side won 2-1 to take them to within one point of their city rivals United, who are in second.
In the Blue Square Bet Premier, Gateshead were beaten 4-2 at bottom of the table Bath with Paul Dummett - awarded the man of the match in his last appearance - playing the whole game.
Fraser Forster's Celtic are in action at Motherwell on Sunday, with the Hoops already confirmed as Scottish Premier League champions, while Xisco will hope to figure for Deportivo la Coruna at home to Elche.
