Newcastle United midfielder Liam Smith has joined League One side Blackpool on a youth loan.

The 20-year-old will remain at Bloomfield Road until Sunday, 8th May, and could make his debut in Saturday's trip to Millwall.

Smith, who hails from South Shields, has been a regular for Newcastle's under-21 side over the last two seasons, and put pen to paper on his first professional contract last summer.

Under the terms of the youth loan, Smith will still be able to represent the Magpies at under-21 level.

Seasiders manager Neil McDonald, who made 206 appearances for Newcastle between 1983 and 1988, told their club's website: "He is a ball-playing midfielder with a good range of passing and I'm looking forward to working with him.

"I've seen him on a couple of occasions and I've been impressed with what he can do."
