Moussa Sissoko was proud to lead Newcastle United out at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, but admits the Magpies were second best against title-chasing Chelsea.
Eden Hazard's hat-trick secured maximum points and a 3-0 victory for the Blues in the Barclays Premier League fixture.
In the absence of injured duo Fabricio Coloccini and Cheick Tiote, powerhouse midfelder Sissoko was handed United's captain's armband by manager Alan Pardew.
The French international revealed after the final whistle that he relished the extra responsibility, although it was ultimately a disappointing afternoon in the capital.
"I was very happy to be the captain but the most important thing is the team, and we lost, which I was not happy about. So I am a little bit sad," Sissoko told nufc.co.uk.
"The manager said to me in the week that maybe I would be the captain for this game. I was very proud to be asked.
"When you are captain you talk more, you try to help every player and I tried to do that, but it was a tough game.
"Today was very difficult game because Chelsea are playing very well at the moment. Everyone knows Hazard is maybe the best player in the league and he showed that today.
"We worked hard but they are a very good team and this is football sometimes.
"We need to work hard in training to make sure our next game is different."
That next game is on Wednesday night as Tottenham Hotspur come to St. James' Park in league action (7.45pm kick-off).
And Sissoko is convinced Newcastle can put an end a run of just one win in eight.
"Chelsea are a big team who are trying to win the league this season, they played very well today, but we need to start thinking about the next game as soon as possible," he explained.
"It is good that the Tottenham game is so quick because we can forget this game and think about winning again.
"Tottenham are a good team but at home we know we can beat anyone."
